Town Hall Square
The magnificent town hall in Stein am Rhein captivates visitors with its colourful façade paintings and impressive half-timbered details. Located in the heart of the old town, it tells of the rich history and culture of this picturesque town on the Rhine.
The town hall was built between 1539 and 1542. For a long time, it also served as a cloth, grain and department store. It acquired its current appearance between 1898 and 1900. At that time, the market hall was closed and the bay window and paintings were added. The historical paintings are by the historical painter Carl von Häberlin from Stuttgart, while the coats of arms and figures are by Christian Schmidt from Zurich. The Gothic Great Council Chamber houses, among other things, the famous collection of coat of arms windows from 1542 and a collection of weapons from the 15th to 18th centuries. The Small Council Chamber, which was furnished with gilded panelling in the Rococo style in 1766, has been the meeting place of the city council since 1542.
