Church «uf Burg» and Roman fort

Unnoticed by many visitors to the medieval town of Stein am Rhein, a small jewel is hidden on the other bank of the Rhine in the form of the church "uf Burg": the oldest place of worship in the canton of Schaffhausen.

Both legally and structurally, it has had a chequered, complicated history and lies in the middle of the Roman fort of Tasgetium, built in the 3rd century. The fort was built shortly before 300 after Christ as a result of the Alemanni invasions. Remains of the walls still bear witness to this today, and the present church is located in the centre of the fort. Excavations have shown that Christian services have been celebrated in the former late Roman fort of Tasgetium for more than 1400 years.

Today, the visitor is rewarded above all with wall paintings in the choir that shine with sacred dignity. They date from shortly before 1420 and depict scenes from the Christian history of salvation in 30 pictures, in three cycles.
