Gypsum Museum
Visit the former gypsum mine in Schleitheim - and learn about the mining methods of the 18th and 19th centuries. A great experience!
The mining of gypsum in above ground and underground goaves provided the whole region of Schleitheim with work and money in the 18th and 19th centuries. There was a great demand for Schleitheim gypsum.
Today you can visit the mines and follow the footsteps of the early miners down to a depth of 150 metres into the mountain, till the little lake support you - like when the miners descended in days gone by.
The water and air temperature in the tunnels is around 10° C both in summer and winter.
To enter the tunnels, which are periodically inspected and secured by mining experts, with deposits of gypsum dating back to around 240 million years, is both a fascinating and educational experience.
